Public Diplomacy: A “European” Solution to Mexico’s Image Problem

Perspectives: Leonardo Curzio

by Editors

Leonardo Curzio analyzes Mexico’s image abroad in his latest book, “Orgullo y prejuicios: Reputación e imagen de México” (Pride and Prejudices: Reputation and Mexico’s Image). The recent election of Donald Trump laid bare Mexico’s troubled image in the United States. Curzio claims that Mexico’s fragile rule of law, violence, and weak leadership were exploited by Donald Trump to build a xenophobic campaign against Mexico. The author urges authorities to reevaluate Mexico’s public diplomacy policy actions to better confront current challenges in the United States. But he further concludes that any effective Mexican public diplomacy strategy must first address the domestic issues that persistently undermine the impression foreign publics have about Mexico: corruption, violence, and poverty.
