The number of deaths related to drug-trafficking and organized crime in Mexico have been more numerous and far-reaching than even before in the past decade. While  the Mexican government has responded with military and enforcement-reform policies, new alternatives have recently been put to test, including targeting drug trafficking mainly as a public health issue. This chapter analyzes the reasons for Mexico’s high concentration of violence among drug traffickers and evaluates possible strategies to counter it.

En la última década, el número de muertes relacionadas al tráfico de drogas y al crimen organizado han sido más numerosas y con mayor alcance que nunca antes. Aunque anteriormente el gobierno de México respondió a este problema de manera militar y dependiendo de una reforma judicial, nuevas alternativas se han estado implementando más recientemente, especialmente algunas en las que el uso de drogas se trata como un problema de salud pública. Este capítulo evalúa las causas detrás de la gran concentración de violencia entre traficantes mexicanos y presenta algunas posibles estrategias para darle frente.
